“The authors of the CCSS acknowledge that in order for students to master the essential foundational skills for reading, effective instruction must be provided, skillfully differentiated to meet the varied needs of students. Struggling readers will typically need much more explicitly targeted guided practice to master the foundation skills than some of their peers, so care should also be taken by teachers to discern which students need additional, appropriate, and effective intervention, as well as when and how to provide it effectively and efficiently.” ~Jan Hasbrouck

Remember EMS!
It is imperative that foundational skills be taught using explicit, multisensory, and systematic instruction.
What is explicit instruction?
Instruction is explicit when the teacher clearly outlines the learning goals for the student and offers clear, unambiguous explanations of the skills and information being presented. The skills are directly taught to the student and feedback is given immediately.
What is multisensory instruction?
Multi-Sensory approaches teach reading and writing (including spelling) through using Auditory (hearing), Visual (sight) and Kinesthetic (movement/touch) pathways. This offers multiple modes for the information to reach the brain and enhances memory and learning.
What is systematic instruction?
Systematic instruction has a definite logical sequence of concept introduction, ordered from more simple to more complex.
